Community News – US HWY 11

We have some big projects going on at Trussville Gas & Water that will impact traffic conditions in Trussville and surrounding cities. Please watch this three minute video to stay informed about our upcoming project on Gadsden Highway.

Please watch the Community News update below for additional information.

The first week of January, our construction teams will be replacing 2.5 miles of water pipeline going down the southbound side of US 11/Gadsden Highway from the Little Cahaba Creek near Carrington to Water Oak Drive. This will be a 10 month project which will include some temporary lane closures down US11/Gadsden Highway.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Why is the water pipe being replaced?

The water main pipeline is currently made of PVC Plastic. PVC is a strong but lightweight plastic material often used in construction. This PVC Pipe has been serving our water customers for more than 30 years. Over time, the PVC has become brittle which could lead to a break in the water main.

Over the next 10 months, we will be replacing this PVC pipe with a superior material called ductile iron. This new iron pipe will be much more durable and should last well over 50 years.

What kind of traffic interruptions should people expect over the next few months?

The new pipeline will be installed on the southbound side of Gadsden Highway/US 11. During this project, drivers may experience some temporary lane closures. Our contractors will be working during the morning and afternoon hours, but any lane closures will be after 8:30 am and before 3:30 pm to help maintain traffic flow during those times. There will be flaggers directing traffic when there is a lane closure. We have a site-specific traffic control plan that has been approved by the Alabama Department of Transportation that includes signage, lane closures and lane channeling at the Deerfoot Parkway Intersection. With this project and all of our projects, our focus is on completing the project timely, but more importantly, we want to ensure the safety of our workers and passing motorists.

Will Trussville Gas & Water customers experience any interruption in their water or gas service during this project?

In the beginning when the main piping is being installed, there will not be any service interruptions. However, as we begin to connect neighborhoods to the water main, there will be some service interruptions. Water customers will be notified 24 hours prior to each planned water interruption. There should not be an interruption in gas service.
