Energy Saving Tips for Extreme Weather!

Extremely cold weather has arrived for our Trussville Gas and Water community. Now is the time to use these handy energy saving tips to help lessen the impact of your natural gas bill.

  • To control heating costs without sacrificing comfort, keep your thermostat around 68 degrees during the day or while the home is occupied. At night or anytime the house is unoccupied, lower the thermostat.
  • Check your furnace filter and replace or clean it as needed to ensure the proper amount of air flow. A dirty furnace filter can drive up the cost of heating your home.
  • Adjust register openings to keep the higher traffic rooms in your home at the desired temperature. Remember that heat rises, so consider partially closing upstairs registers.
  • Use curtains, blinds, or shutters on all windows to slow the loss of heat through the window. Keep window coverings open on sunny days to let in the sun’s warmth.  Close them to insulate against cold air at night.
  • Rearrange furniture for winter by placing it beside inside walls to be sure it is not blocking heat registers and air returns.
  • Add a humidifier to keep air moist and help control heating costs. Moist air feels warmer.
  • Use kitchen and bath ventilation sparingly in cold weather. These fans can quickly push warm air out of the house.
  • Make sure ceiling fan mountings are tight. Use clear caulking to seal any leaks.  Even a minor crack around the base can allow cold air to seep in.
  • Use inexpensive insulation gaskets and seal out the cold entering your home through electrical switches and outlets.
  • Closets and cabinets on outside walls can leak cold air so be sure the doors fit tightly and keep them closed.

As your natural gas provider, we are doing our part to provide safe and reliable services to the Trussville Gas and Water community during these extreme weather conditions. Using these energy saving tips can help you avoid a surprisingly high energy bill next month. Stay safe and warm out there!
